Time for the Annual Notebook Purge Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Every once in a while my notebooks get crammed with doodles, layouts, plans, and other such things. I think it may be an illness. I really need to stop scratching out ideas on anything and everything within reach.

Periodically, My Apartment gets so crammed with all this material and I force myself to recycle anything that I would deem irrelevant. Here’s a smidgen of the last couple months:

Redesign, Already?! Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Okay so, this sight has been up for about a month now. I still have some tweaking to do but for the most part it accomplishes what it is supposed to do. We can’t have that. If anything this past year has taught me is that everything has to be in constant chaos. It’s when the dust settles and the hunter can fix his aim that you stand the highest risk of being put down.

That’s why I’m working on a re-design already. That and I want to integrate all these sites into one cohesive thing. below is a mock-up.

Poor, Queer Kids From Pittsburgh Thursday, August 20th, 2009

More and more regularly it seems, my design group is hit with needing to develop a full ad campaign in a little more than a half a day. That’s usually when I pull out my good ol’ idea sack and kick out something fast and dirty.

Yesterday, I received one such project with no copy and no real direction. All I was given was the name of the product – an agri-product. So, to the memory mines I went. I’ve been readingFactory Made, a book about Andy Warhol and the culture that built up around his studio.

What is wrong with you? Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Hi America. I’ve been a little scared to take to you. With all this health care debate and town halls and Fox News, I found out something about you.

America, you’re one bat-shit crazy motherf****. Seriously, there isn’t even an actual bill on the table and your congress people are just going around to have a civil dialouge with you and you have to be all, “We should all be afraid of Obama! He’s going to kill our grandmothers and our babies, and steal our guns, and make us read , and make us wear britches and stop spitting on the floor!”

Pitch Fork Sunday, August 9th, 2009

Review

Okay, this is a little late, as everything else, but as This weekend is Lollapalooza Time up here, I’ll post my review of the Pitchfork Festival. I don’t actually follow the site for my music reviews and I’m told that their opinions are controversial at best. I am not jumping in that minefield. For just $41 it is a way cheaper festival than Lollapalooza and a lot of others plus, it does have a wide spectrum of bands.I chose to hit up the Sunday ticket as it seemed the most interesting.

The Venue

Okay there were some pretty strict sounding rules for the event. They wouldn’t even allow reentry into the park. I found out that was actually a pretty good call. Let’s just say a bunch of pasty-white hipsters are way out of place around Union Park. It really is something when one sees the ladies in their Sunday hats and a white-suited pimp with his lucite cane all lower their heads passing by muttering, “damn this neighborhood is going to hell.” And, you know, they’re right.

The food was probably the best festival food I’ve seen. It was all reasonably priced too, which is amazing for outdoor concerts. I’ll get into all the vendors in a later blog, but here’s a note I’m not running around on a dusty hot day with an armload of vinyl folks. Y’all need a holding area.

Also Threadless, the ironic hipster online t-shirt people, their booth was packed from minute 5 until close. I believe they have indeed conquered teh interwebz.

The only real drawback the whole day was the sound engineering. The B and C stages were just horrible. there were some bands that I had to spend half the set trying to find a sweet spot to listen. Oh and one other thing, Two headliners playing at the same time? that was kinda douchey. You really should just have one capping act Pitchfork. Now on to the bands…

Oh, Hai! Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

Biographical

Spoons to Skyscrapers

Welcome to yet another blog choking the internet. I guess it was only a matter of time before I actually put something together. As with many things, this site is an ongoing and evolving creature.

My main reason for this little chunk of internet real estate is to pursue my interests in arts and cultural reporting. This is a passion I’ve had for quite sometime and as regular media options have all but disappeared, (more on the later) this seems as good a place as any to indulge such interests.

So without further ado, let’s do a little topic run-down!
